Drink Skim Milk Gain More Weigh!
I hope that all of the people who use and read Typepad had a very enjoyable Thanksgiving, as for my holiday: I overindulged and paid for it with a restless night of sleep, Oh well, that just means an extra mile or two of running today.
Now, back to the subject at hand...low-fat dairy.
Ladies, have you been avoiding the full-fat ice cream and cheese fearing you'll gain weight?
Well, according to the latest research this isn't true. The process of removing fat from milk also strips away key nutrients that optimize the body's ability to burn fat, maintain energy, stave off certain cancers and much more. Below are 5 reasons, you may want to rethink your position on Full-fat dairy...
1) Burn More Fat-
Women from Sweden who eat at least 2 servings of regular milk, cream cheese and sour cream are better able to ward off age-related weight gain than those women who avoided it. Researchers tested women over a 5 year period and found that the full-fat dairy eaters weighed less than their low-fat eating sisters. Why? Milk fat is among the richest natural sources of conjugated linoleic acid, which blocks fat from entering body cells. This ensures fat calories-from all food sources-are burned instead of stored.
2) Better Moods-
Unhappy eating low-fat? Research shows that the fat found in traditional dairy desserts like ice cream and creamy pudding greatly slows the rate at which sugar enters the bloodstream. This guards against unhealthy spikes in cortisol and insulin, hormones that trigger backlash effects like mood swings when their levels crash. But, on the other hand, low-fat dairy snacks have a dual mood-dampening effect: They release sugar rapidly, plus they're often higher in sugar to compensate for the flavor loss that occurs when the fat is taken out.
3) Lower Cancer Risks-
Colorectal cancer rates dropped 15% for every two servings of full-fat dairy people consumed per day. Part of the credit goes to whole milk's fatty acids (not present in skim), which are proven to fight tumor growth. But whole milk's butterfat may also have an effect: It's a chief dietary source of two compounds that inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
4) Taller Kids-
A story done on ABC News weekend edition said that kids in certain Scandinavian countries were outgrowing kids from other parts of the World, especially Americans. Fresh, full-fat dairy was one reason. Kids who eat more dairy grow taller and have bones that are stronger than their low-fat eating counterparts. Moms in too many American surburbs are fearful of fat and may be doing their kids (especially girls) a disservice. Also important for taller kids: make sure when they (kids) do have their full-fat dairy it's not accompanied with cookies, burgers, whole pizzas and other white foods. These are also the culprits that rob kids of growing to their full potential.
5) Infertility-
I've written a post or two on full-fat dairy and conception, but it needs to be repeated, considering all of the money couples spend on fertility treatments. For the 1 in 5 women going through infertility, if you consume 2 or more servings of full-fat dairy a day, you may slash your risk of anovulatory infertility (a failure to ovulate) by up to 40%. Researchers say they need more time to pinpoint why full-fat is so beneficial, it won't hurt to give it try. So, a serving of ice cream, some regular cheddar and a glass of milk may be all that's necessary to fulfill your wish of a baby.
And also important: Women who consume more full-fat dairy have a better chance of having multiple births. It may be the hormones in dairy. This should really be incentive to stop paying high-priced fertility clinics. Can anyone say John&Kate Plus Eight?
That's It- And although this info may help someone, remember if dairy causes a itchy nose, runs to the bathroom or upset stomach, then it might be best to avoid it altogether. Fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, nuts and whole grains are still great ways to keep weight off, prevent colon cancer, brighten moods and conceive.
Good Luck!
